Angel’s Envy Distillery/Tourist Center

Project of the Year / Louisville Business First Real Estate Champions

The former Vermont American Building was given new life as Angel’s Envy’s first home.  This restoration and addition to the historic 1800s building was an architectural and structural challenge.  We were able to salvage and restore all the exterior walls and cast iron structure and the wood interior is almost an exact replica of the historic structure.

The visitor center addition is visually separated from the rest of the building with a butt-joint glazed two story curtain wall.  The glass structure visually separates and transitions the old from the new.  The brick addition’s design takes its cues from the historic building without recreating the past structure.  “We did not want to create a false history of the building,” explains Cash Moter, Partner at Joseph & Joseph Architects. “A visitor to the site should be able to tell what is new and what is historic, but the new structure should be sympathetic to its neighboring structure.”

The visitor center interior design was inspired by the personality of Lincoln Henderson and his family and the industrial past of the original building.  The visitor is taken on a sensory journey through the distillery.  Featuring a dramatic canopy made from reclaimed wood beams, while warm oak, charred wood and natural limestone, representative of the whiskey making process, form a central tasting table and retail display cabinets.  Iron racks with large metal letters suspended by elevator cables, a curved brass reception counter and herringbone-patterned floors reflect the building’s history.

Graphics hand-painted directly on to the equipment and walls, installations that show off the personalities of the employees and a demonstration rickhouse enrich the distillery tour, which finishes at the first-floor tasting bar – formed from a single oak tree.
